Promotion of Youth Employment and Vocational Training in Kenya

PROMOTION OF YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN KENYA  

The main objective of the project is to Establish Centres of excellence for cooperative training at selected public Technical Vocational Education and Training institutes that shall offer high quality labor market-oriented training to Kenyan youth in specific trades with a strong engagement of surrounding industries for improved employment.

The project aims to enhance the quality of TVET graduates by increasing industry involvement in TVET training. Seven TVET institutitons were targeted under this initiative.

In the first phase, three institutions (Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, Nairobi Technical Training Institute, and Thika Training Institute) benefitted through the provision of Infrastructure, Procurement of training equipment, Upgrade and installation of ICT solutions for training, internet connectivity and management and training of trainers on technical Equipment, efficient utilization of workshop space. Additionally, equipment for Industrial Mechatronics, Automotive Mechatronics, and Automotive Body Building were procured for these institutions.

Phase two of the project also supports the modernization of training infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment at four beneficiary institutions; Ekerubo Egeitai, Kitale National Polytechnic, Ramogi Institute of Applied Technology and Bumbe Technical.

The seven institutions are undergoing capacity development in terms of: Curriculum development, Trainers capacity building and Development of business strategic plans.

Future plans of the project focus on Digitalization for TVET as a key area to support vocational education and training in Kenya to better meet the requirements of the labour market in a digitally enabled economy. Digital technology can drive innovation, economic growth and job creation in many key sectors of the economy. The project can support to the implementation of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), by providing young people with digital skills through vocational training and thus enabling them to participate more economically.
